Missing Puzzle Piece

Warning!  There is some sexual themes involved in this, but not enough to actually mark it.  Enjoy!

The phone rang, not once, but three times before you decided to answer it.  You were so engrossed in your book that you hadn't noticed the familiar chime of your ringtone until it was almost too late.  You couldn't seem to recall the number on your caller ID and to be quite frank, you weren't too fond of answering.  But thinking that it might be important, you picked up your phone and flipped it open, pressing the answer button.  There was a brief pause until you finally piped up the energy to say, "Hello, this is ______.  To whom am I speaking to?"

"Oh hallo!  This is Mr. Tino, your son, Joshua's Geometry teacher.  I'm here to do the discussing of some… pressing matters with you.  Joshua seems to be failing his class and he hasn't done anything of the sorts to fix it, so I decided to give you a call."

'He's got a strange accent.' you thought.

"Is that so?  Well, Joshua hasn't talked to me about this." You said skeptically through the phone.  It was as if this man were almost mocking you, his accent so cheery and what-not.

"Well I can definitely see why, Mrs. __(last name)__ — "

"Miss."

"Oh, I am so terribly sorry!  Ms. __(last name)__, this is most awkward for me..  But anyways, I would like to have a parent-teacher conference with you, I think it would be of great help for Joshua.  I don't like having students fail my class so would you be so kind as to set an appointment tomorrow?"

You sat for a second contemplating whether to meet the man or not.  I mean, why?  You could just help your son with his homework.  Then again, he might be suffering from not having a fatherly figure like most kids in his grade…  Not that he had a choice though; you didn't even know who the father was.  It was a whirlwind tour of Europe in college; you were young and you were wild.  Let's just say that with his blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes, there where multiple possibilities.

"If you want me to move that, I would so happily do so?" the cheery voice snapped you back to reality and you answered, "Oh, no, tomorrow is fine with me."

"That is most excellent!  How about five in the afternoon?  Does that sound most good to you?"

"Yeah, that's perfect, see you then."

*click*

You set the phone down and sighed, you wish you could help your son, but truth was, you barley made it through high school and flunked out of college your freshman year after having Joshua.  How were you going to help your son with his work if you couldn't even remember how to calculate the perimeter of a square?

"Hey Josh?" you called from the living room.  There was a brief silence before you heard the creak of his door open and the faint sound of the dup-flap… duck-step… dub-duck-whatever it was, playing from his iPod approaching.  He entered in one of his black, band t-shirts, complimented with those God-awful black skinny jeans, a grey jacket and those fat skater shoes.

"Yeah." He answered monotonically.  You could barely see his eyes as his hair needed a trim, or some weed-whacking…

"Your Geometry teacher called, he said you were failing." You said in a serious tone.  Josh averted eye contact of any sort, making sure his gaze was fixated on the floor as he mumbled, "Yeah…"

"Why are you failing?  Answer me honestly.  I'm not mad honey, just concerned is all." You said soothingly, standing up and walking towards him.  Damn, he was taller than you… how time flies.  You brushed his hair aside to get a good look at his mocha eyes, but he jerked away.

"God mom, don't you ever just leave me alone for one damn minute!" he growled as he stormed away into his room.  Your heart shattered to pieces, watching your son ignore you, watching him stray from you.  You remembered those days when he would cuddle up with you in your bed in the middle of a storm and you'd tell him tails of vast, magical lands and mythical creatures.  Dragons, those were his favorites; he loved it when you read Eragon to him.  That was his favorite.

Now, he never talks, spends all of his time in his room blasting that crap-music and only comes down to eat dinner… on occasion.  How could you have let it come to this?  It made you feel like you were neglecting your son; were you neglecting your son?  Is he feeling neglected?  There were too many questions and no answers to solve them.  You wanted to regain that bond with your teenage son again, but being a young parent is not as easy as it seems.

You were always working, two jobs to be precise, and you made it home just in time to bring carry out dinner.  Your life was falling to shambles and even though it hurts to say it, so is his.  He needs help, he needs a superior, and he needs a father…

~~

You knocked on the door with a label next to it reading, "Tino Väinämöinen."  You squinted trying to comprehend such a detailed name, but to no prevail could you figure it out.  Your thoughts were interrupted by the shifting of the doorknob and the creak of the door.  Your gaze was placed on a young, average height man, still taller than you, but you've seen taller.  He had pale blonde hair and dark, chocolate eyes that sparkled in joy.  His skin was paler than snow and his smile was so sweet.

"Hi there!  You must be Ms. ______!" the man said as he extended his palm out towards you.  You smiled softly and shook his warm hand.  The man directed you to a chair across from his desk and he sat in his, pulling out a file with "Joshua __(last name)__" written on it.

"You have a folder for my son?" you asked, slightly agitated.  The man's eyes grew wide as he noticed your discomfort to the folder.  He quickly returned your question saying, "Oh, it's not what you think!  I have one for every student, I do not opt students out ma'am."  You nodded and he proceeded to pull out various tests and papers that had the disgruntling F plastered on every sheet.  An occasional D would pop up, but mostly F's.

"Oh my God." You gasped quietly, seeing all of his grades.  You never knew?  He never told you, he'd simply say that he did his homework in study hall or that there was none assigned.  You felt heat rise in your cheeks and tears were threatening to spill, but you kept it all together and bottled within.

Tino seemed to notice your distress and he placed one of his warm hands on yours as he said, "It's okay Ms. __(last name)__, I asked you to come so I can talk to you about fixing this."  You slowly nodded, biting your lip as you refrained from spilling your tears.

You pushed the papers away, trying to push the problems away, all of the sadness, the fear, the pain, you pushed it away, but that doesn't mean that it stays away.  Eventually it will come back to haunt you, but you ignored that and shoved them away.  Tino was really noticing your pain and frustration in your clouded (e/c) eyes, he truly felt sorry for you.

He then grasped your hand in his, smiling warmly which in return, made you blush.  He then said, "I want to tutor your son on the weekends Ms. __(last name)__, I really like your son and I don't want him failing my class just as much as you don't.  I think it would be best, plus I can bring my teenage nephew with me and they can both study together, it would be nice to see Joshua branch out and make a few friends.  My nephew is the same way, so there are no worries on trying to adjust him.  I promise Ms. __(last name)__, it will be just fine."

You smiled slightly and thanked him quietly.  Tino only smiled widely in return and withdrew his soft, warm hand from yours to put Josh's file back into a cabinet.  For some reason, as soon as his hand departed from yours, you felt empty again… alone.

"So will this weekend be fine for you?" Tino asked.

"Yeah, what time would you be showing up?"

"Saturdays, I can arrive with Emil around five in the afternoon and tutor them until seven or eight.  Sunday's I'll come by myself at noon.  If that's alright with you that is?" he asked.  You smiled and nodded enthusiastically, making Tino smile even wider.

"That's such great news to hear!  Then I will see you and Joshua on Saturday." He cheered happily as he walked you to the door.   Once he opened it and you walked out, you felt that familiar warm hand placed on your shoulder, you turned around to meet Tino's bight eyes as he said, "I promise, I'll do everything I can to help him pass."

"Thank you so much…" you said with a small smile gracing your red lips.  The man blushed to such a sight as you walked away.  Never had he thought Joshua's mom would be so young, but so beautiful too…

~~

*Ding-Dong*

"Hey Josh, can you get that?" you shouted from the kitchen as you cut the vegetables for the broth you were making for dinner.  Josh grunted and rumbled down the stairs, then opening the door to find Mr. Tino … and some other kid.

"Hallo there Joshua, this is my nephew Emil." Tino motioned the stoic teen to shake Josh's hand and Emil did so, Josh reciprocating, "I'm tutoring the both of you today, so grab your books, calculator, paper and pencil!" Tino chimed happily.  Josh nodded and collected the items, bringing them to the living room where Emil was already sitting.  Tino decided to pay you a quick visit in the kitchen.

You felt a tap on your shoulder and you jumped, cutting your finger lightly with the knife.

"Mr. Tino, please don't scare me like that…" you said, sucking your finger clean from the blood.  Tino panicked as he searched for a napkin, apologizing repeatedly as he scrambled frantically when he finally found one.

"I'm so sorry!  I didn't mean to scare you!  I just wanted to say hallo and that we'll be in the living room…" he said handing you a napkin.  You chuckled and said, "It's alright Mr. Tino.  I'll be in here if you need anything."

"You can just call me Tino if you want?" the man said with a blush.  Your cheeks dusted with a shade of red and you nodded retorting, "Then y-you can just call me ______...  If you want?"

"That would be nice… ______." He said, smiling as he said your name in his rich accent.  You blushed further and he nodded ado as he turned around and headed towards the living room.

Surprisingly after an hour of studying, Josh and Emil grew quite fond of each other; having the same interests and disinterests with each other.  It was a wonderful sight to see, your son gaining a friend, it melted your heart.  Tino would help them solve equations and praise them for their hard work, which only made you feel so flustered on the inside.

Once dinner was ready, you all gathered to sit at the dining room table, something you hadn't done with Josh for a long time… and it was rather nice.  Tino sat next to you as Emil sat next to Josh, chatting away in their own little world, it was such a comforting sight to see.  You felt an elbow nudge you and you looked over to find a slight, smug grin that Tino wore as he whispered, "Look at them, they're already making plans to hang out after studying tomorrow."

"Really?" you asked in a hushed tone.  Tino nodded happily and took a bite of the stew.

"Wow, this is really good, I do like it much ______!" he sang as he took another bite.  You thanked him and watched him as he ate.  There was something that bugged you about him…  not in a bad way, but there was something so familiar about him.  You just couldn't quite catch it.  Shrugging off the feeling you ate your stew contently as both you and Tino conversed with Josh and Emil, like a big and happy family dinner.

~~

Weeks had passed by and Joshua's grades had improved tenfold.  You couldn't have been more proud when he brought his report card home, showing you the B+ he made.  Granted, it wasn't an A, you could have cared less.  Your baby was exceeding; and it was all thanks to Tino.

That didn't mean Tino stopped coming over to tutor, in fact, Tino would come over just to hang out with you and Josh, bringing Emil along and all of you would have a grand time.  It didn't take too long though, for Tino to finally approach you in a more intimate way.

~~

The phone rang only once, before you answered it, knowing Tino's caller ID like the back of your hand.  It didn't take long for conversation to strike; one thing led to another until…

"So, ______, the reason as to why I am calling you is…" Tino cleared his throat; was he flustered?

"I w-was wondering if maybe, you w-would like to g-go get dinner with me tonight?" he asked.  You blushed harshly to his words; you had to admit, you've grown a liking to the strange man, he was just so perfect and connected well with your son and he was just so…  So perfect.

"I would love to Tino.  What time?" you asked a little more enthusiastically then planned.  You heard a soft chuckle on the other line and he answered, "How about an hour?"

"That sounds lovely, Tino.  See you then." And then you hung up.  You didn't have to worry about Joshua because he was hanging out with Emil and Emil's friend from Hong-Kong at his brother's house, so you decided to primp up for you little dinner, pulling on a cute patterned dress and curling your (h/l) hair to perfection.  The only thing missing was a touch of makeup, which you applied gently, not wanting to overdo it.

The door bell rang just as you finished sliding into your small heels and you grabbed your purse and opened the door to find Tino in a white button up shirt accompanied with a red tie, tucked into a pair of black slacks and to top it off, his finest dressy shoes.

"Wow, ______, you look so pretty."  Tino said more to himself as he scanned you from head to toe.  You blushed from his stare, you haven't had a man stare at you in ages and to be honest, it was frightening for you.  Although, you had to admit, Tino looked rather ravishing himself.

"Thank you…  You look rather nice yourself…" you said.  It was now Tino's turn to blush, but to distract himself, he took your hand in his and walked you to the passenger seat of his car.  The car ride was eventful with conversation and laughter.  Tino really knew how to  put a smile on your face.

Dinner was by far, the best you've ever had in years.  Men didn't really treat you out much, due to the fact alone that you had a kid.  That just doesn't seem to attract a lot of guys, but Tino, Tino was different; he understood Joshua, he loved Joshua and Joshua loved him, thus only making you fall deeper for Tino.

"Can I ask you something ______?" Tino asked, taking a sip of the wine he ordered.

"Yeah, shoot."

"For the weeks that I've known you, I've always had just the strangest feeling that I've met you somewhere?  But nothing seems to be ringing the bells…" Tino said as he looked at you with a puzzled expression.  You tilted your head to the side and said, "Strange…  I've been feeling the same way.  I don't know why though…  Say, I've always wanted to ask you something but I always thought it might offend you."

"What is is ______?" Tino asked, his interest sparked even more than it previously was.

"Where are you from?  You have such a different accent than others, but it just seems so…. familiar."  Tino chuckled as he finished off the rest of his glass and then setting it on the table.

"You really thought I would be offended?  Hah, hah, that's so cute ______.  I'm from Finland.  After I finished college there, I decided to move to (country) and find a job for teaching.  Finland does have the highest education at the moment, so it wasn't so hard for me to find a job."

You sat there puzzled for a second; you visited Finland on your European tour... during your freshman year… and you partied with other Finnish colleges… and you got drunk… and you had unprotected sex with one blonde Finnish man there… and then it clicked.

"Oh my God.  Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God…" you gasped repeatedly.  Tino arched an eyebrow as he asked, "What's wrong?  Do you need to go home?" You kept staring at Tino and then at a picture of Josh you kept in your wallet and then back at Tino.

"How could I have not noticed this before?!" you cursed to yourself.  Tino grew worried as he took your hand in his oh-so familiar warm palms.  You looked up at him, eyes wide and teary.

"______, what is wrong?  Please tell me." Tino cooed, trying not to draw attention from other customers.  Once you finally regained the ability to speak you quietly asked, "Tino, when you were in college, did you ever… you know… party?"  Tino furrowed his brows together as he nodded hesitantly.

"Okay…  Did you ever have sex with a random girl at one party?" you asked a little more hushed.  Tino's face went red from embarrassment from your question but soon, went completely pale.

"Yes…  But it was one party, I don't know, sixteen years ago?  I lost my virginity to an (country origin) girl…" he trailed off as he scanned you again, this time, more attention was applied, "Don't tell me that was you?" you nodded and then something hit Tino like a bag of bricks when he finally gasped, "Oh my God!  You aren't saying…"

"Joshua…"

"He's… my son?!"

The atmosphere grew tense and you just wanted to cry from the mixture of emotions that swirled within you.  You hadn't the slightest clue how Tino felt; was he angry, upset, happy, depressed?  You had no clue.  Tino looked as if he were about to throw up.

"Check please." Tino asked the waiter as he passed by.  You felt your heart drop as Tino said those two words.  That was it.  He's going to stop tutoring Joshua, he might even switch him out of his class!  Just great.

"______?"  You looked up to meet a pair of caring chocolate orbs as he said, "Are you alright?"  You sat motionless, unknowing of how to respond.  Tino frowned as you didn't answer and paid for the meal in cash; getting up, the then extended his palm towards yours and you grasped it wearily.

The car ride back to your town house was silent, dead silent.  Not a sound was made except for the humming of the car's engine.  Finally, you had reached your house and you tried to open the door, but Tino put on the child lock.  He turned towards you and with a firm stare ha said, "We need to talk."

"About what?  The fact that I had your child and you weren't there for him!" you yelled, releasing sixteen years of bottled up anger.  Tino jumped, but retorted, "How was I to know when you left me!  You left me in that bed, after I lost my virginity… you left me in the bed to wake up alone the next morning.  Do you know how much that hurt me ______?" he asked as his eyes grew glassy.  Tears were already running down your cheeks, you couldn't decide whether you should be mad at him or yourself.

"Because of that, I haven't slept with another woman ______... for sixteen years.  I was so scared that would happen to me again…" you felt a twinge of guilt as he said those words; you never knew that you had that impact on one person.  That one person being the father of your son.

"Tino… I…  I'm sorry.." you said quietly.  Tino was silent for a while but then he turned to face you, cheek red and stained from tears, "But you know what?"  You looked up to meet his sorrowful gaze and he said, "I'm willing to start over…"

"What?" you gasped.  Tino chuckled and grabbed one of your hands, gently kissing your palm, "Let's give it another go." He said, kissing each knuckle between each word.  You blushed, but didn't stop him.  Well, that was until you realized that you were in his car.

"Tino…" Tino continued to kiss up your arm when he answered you with a, "Hmm?"

"L-Let's take this inside… shall we?" Tino stopped, when he reached your neck, planting a soft and needy kiss he whispered, "It would be of my pleasure…"

~~

Your eyes fluttered open to the morning rays of the bright, orange sunlight that seepthed through the shutters on your bedroom window.  Your white sheets all askew from last night's endeavors, and a warm body happily wrapped up in yours.  You looked up to find a pair or caramel eyes upon you and a bright and warm smile.

"Good morning sleepy head." He whispered as he planted a soft kiss on your nose.  You giggled and pulled him closer to you, not wanting to let go.  Tino happily obliged and placed his forehead on yours, staring into your glittering (e/c) eyes and wanting to kiss your soft and supple lips.  This was just perfect for him, too perfect.

"Can I tell you something ______?" he asked.  You sighed contently and nodded.  "Since the day we had our first encounter and every day since then, I have always loved you." He whispered.  Your heart melted right there as you kissed him softly, but passionately on the lips.  He happily accepted the fervent kiss and once you parted you set your forhead on his again and whispered, "I have always loved you too, Tino.  Always."

"Minä rakastan sinua ______."

~~

There was the sound of a car pulling in and a few muffled voices.  Both you and Tino shot up from the bed and exchanged horrid expressions, gasping simultaneously, "Josh and Emil!"  You two hurried out of bed, slipping on what clothes you could find and rushed downstairs to sit on the couch and grabbing your book.  Tino, noticing he forgot his pants, grabbed a blanket, throwing it on his lap, sat on the other side of the couch and turned on the TV as soon as the boys walked in.

"Uh.. Uncle Tino, what are you doing here?" Emil asked skeptically, noticing his wrinkly dress shirt that was buttoned crookedly and his hair was combed unevenly.

"Oh!  I was just… here for your tutoring!  Ja!" Tino stumbled with his words and our face was growing redder by the second.

"But it's ten in the morning?  We don't start for another seven hours?"

"Mom..  What's going on?" Josh asked as arched an eyebrow.

"Sw-sweetheart, I invited Mr. Tino over because—because I—Oh Josh it's just the funniest story!" you said, trying to stall for time.  It wasn't working.  There was a new person that walked into your home, he was taller than Emil and maybe taller than Tino, blonde hair, pale, violet eyes and had his hair clipped up with a cross pin.

He turned to look at you and Tino and smirked slightly saying, "Oh, you must be ______.  I've heard so much about you.  I'm Lukas, Emil's older brother and caretaker, as well as Tino's brother." Lukas walked over to Tino saying, "Tino?  This is so unlike you…  You're always so clean-cut?" Lukas then eyed the both of you as he said, "Looks like you just… woke up."

"Oh…" both teenagers hummed simultaneously, knowing exactly what happened.

"This is awkward." Emil stated bluntly as he walked upstairs.  Josh stared for a little bit, but shrugged and followed Emil upstairs.  You sighed in relief and shot Lukas a dirty look.  He only chuckled asking, "What?  I was just pointing out the obvious.  Anyways, I came to drop off Emil and Joshua.  It was nice to meet you Ms. ______, I do hope we meet again… in a less awkward situation, hopefully." He said as soon as he left.  You looked over at Tino and the many shades of blush that crept on his cheeks during the duration of the past five minutes would put even the roses to shame.

"You don't think this would hurt Josh… do you ______?" he asked quietly.  You shook your head scooting closer and kissing his cheek for comfort.

"He likes you Tino, I just think I should explain to him about you being his father.  I just don't know how he's going to react though…" you mumbled quietly.  Tino wrapped his arms around you and pulled you into a loving embrace as he said, "We can explain to him together."

~~ (and you guys are FULLY dressed) ~~

"— and that's what happened." You said.

"It wasn't until last night that we figured everything out Josh.  I just want you to know though, that even though this turns the tables a little bit, I am still here for you and you've always been like a son to me, so I don't see anything any different." Tino finished as he placed a warm palm on Josh's shoulder, smiling sweetly at him.  Josh remained silent for a while, until you saw a tear trickle down his cheek.

"Oh sweetheart—" you gasped, but you were interrupted as Josh quickly latched onto Tino, crying in his chest.  Tino, shocked at first, wrapped his arms around him and soon chuckled as he held the sobbing teen tighter.

"I've been waiting so long to see you.." Josh said between sobs, "only to find out, you've always been here.."

You began to cry as well, watching your son finally meet his father.  Tino extended his hand out towards yours and nodded for you to join and you did, happily.

You had found the missing puzzle piece…  You found Tino.
